Rapid rebound in HBV DNA in previously undetectable hepatitis B/HIV
co-infected patients switching from tenofovir to entecavir therapy
•Purpose of the study: To describe the effects of switching from a TDF-based regimen to ETV for HBV suppression in HIV/HBV co-infected patients with previously undetectable HBV DNA
•Baseline results:
–6 patients switched to ETV because of nephrotoxicity to TDF
–All patients were HBeAg+ and had undetectable HBV DNA
–5/6 patients had prior HBV DNA samples for GT resistance testing
–100% revealed evidence of 3TC resistance (presence of L180M and M204V)
•Outcome results:
–All patients experienced HBV rebound on ETV
–Median time to rebound was 2 months
–Only 1 patient developed a rise in ALT
–All patients maintained virological suppression for HIV
